Kevin DeYoung says it “may be the most important doctrine you’ve never heard of.” What is that elusive doctrine? Union with Christ. I have no way of measuring doctrines people have never heard of, but I have a hunch he may be right.
What is union with Christ? It is the idea that when I put my faith in Christ I am united with him. But it’s not just an idea, it’s a fact, a glorious reality. From that moment, I am in Christ. That’s where I live and move and have my being, my identity and my destiny. And not only that, but I also have Christ in me. That’s how I can live to please him and why I will one day be like him. If you are a Christian then you are in Christ and Christ is in you. You are united with Christ.
Rankin Wilbourne (yes, that really is his name) puts it this way in his excellent book Union with Christ: “‘You are in Christ’ gives you assurance. “Christ is in you’ gives you power. Together they help us move out in confidence … When we fail, or when we are afraid, we have an anchor – we are in Christ. When we are tired, or when the road looks too long, we have an engine – Christ is in us … The battle rages on. But the final outcome is certain. And so is the strength to endure.”
Yours warmly, in Christ,
Chris Hobbs (Senior Minister/Vicar)
