Older People

Older people play an active part in our church family and lead many key activities.  Some have been members here for over 40 years.

We don’t generally organise activities specifically for older people, as they generally wish to be part of our regular activities.

The one exception is the Day Centre, which cares for older people who are housebound.

Day Centre

The Day Centre for the elderly meets on Wednesdays, 10am – 2.30pm. Our aim is to provide a safe, loving environment for our older people where they can form friendships that in turn become a network of support.

Facilities
Day Centre is held in the Cranmer Room at St Stephen’s. The building is all on one level with full disabled access, including a disabled toilet.

Transport
Members are picked up from their homes and brought directly to the entrance, where they are met by our volunteers – and taken home again at the end.

Activities
In the morning, we serve tea/coffee and biscuits, with plenty of time to chat.

A hot meal, home-cooked on the premises, is served at lunch time.

In the afternoon, we host a variety of activities, from bingo, films and quizzes, to card-making, cake-decorating and flower-arranging. Every now and then, we host a varied range of entertainers, including singers, musicians, historians and other guest speakers.

Services
We hold a half-hour service on the first Wednesday of each month.

On the third Wednesday of each month, Day Centre members can join in a Bible study if they wish, where they are also free to ask questions.

Outings
We have at least two outings per year:

  • Christmas Lunch at a local restaurant
  • Summer outing, usually in June

Charity Events
Day Centre charity events are always fun! Our favourite is a charity walk around the Selly Park area, with tea/coffee and biscuits served en-route, raising money for our adopted charity, MacMillan Cancer Support.

Alongside our charity walk, we also host coffee mornings in aid of MacMillan, as well as supporting Operation Christmas Child and St Mary’s Hospice Christmas Lights Appeal.
